One of the talking points from FIFA’s The Best show was the absence of the Barcelona players, four of whom were named in the FIFPro XI – Pique, Iniesta, Messi
Barcelona’s official excuse for failing to attend was their Copa del Rey game against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, but that story is a little hard to swallow.
Put it like this: had Leo Messi or Andres Iniesta won the award, you can bet your bottom dollar they would have been there.
Andres Iniesta did appear on screen during the show to apologize for Barcelona’s absence, but the feeling remained that they still could have made the effort to be there.
Clash between players and club hierarchy
But it seems their absence wasn’t due to a stroppy sulk over Messi or Iniesta being snubbed.
According to Marca, the players took it upon themselves to boycott the gala, to show their discontent with the Barca board.
The players are apparently livid with the club’s hierarchy for not sending any directors to attend the first leg of their Copa del Rey clash against Athletic Bilbao last week.
It seems internal political strife and struggles are never far from the surface at Barcelona.
